For Literacy and Art – Mural Project

“For Literacy and Art”

By Scott Umstattd

The Children’s Art Foundation is a non- profit organization founded in 2010 by artist Hannah Jarmain and a group of avid and friendly volunteer workers, writers, painters, photographers, film makers and teachers, to help underprivileged children reach their full potential through art.

Its goal is to take education in art and literacy to disadvantaged children in rural communities of San Miguel de Allende, taking the amazing program and the teachers to their doorsteps. Children learn drawing, painting, imagining and story writing, the life skills of self- expression. Children develop fine motor skills, attention to detail, problem solving and self-confidence; all while having fun and learning to draw great picture and create great stories.

On November 20th San Miguel’s well know international artist Toller Cranston, a supporter of the Children’s art program, came to weave his magic with 40 school children and inspire them into a frenzy, to create four mural arts for posterity at the public school Ignacio Allende in guadalupe.

One could witness this historic mural painting process from the bridge across from the art center Fabrica La Aurora.
The event is sponsored by the  San Miguel Community Church and is one of the public aspects of the Children’s Art Foundation’s Art and Literacy program, seeking to inspire children to express their creative talent through Mural Art.
The Foundation also seeks to provide another creative way in story writing and encourage children to do illustrations from books and stories to enhance their literacy. It puts brushes and pencils, paper and paints into the hands of children, so their hopes and dreams can find voice.
Mexican author Francisco Javier Morales has donated the proceeds of his book “Artists of San Miguel and other Stories” to support the Children’s Art Foundation’s program. The book is in la Tienda of the Biblioteca and many book stores in town. It features humorous short stories of birds, friendship, love and mishaps, all with happy endings, to inspire the children to use their imagination and illustrate for the upcoming art contest.
We hope you support the work of The Children’s Art Foundation and visit the art classes in any of the four communities where weekly classes are being taught.

Toller Cranston Inspires School Children with Mural Work

 Thursday November 20th 11:30AM-1:30PM

Witness a genius at work. From the Aurora Bridge, across from the art center Fabrica La Aurora, you can see the art activities begin on the blank walls at Escuela Ignacio Allende. Well know international artist and resident of San Miguel, Toller Cranston, will weave his magic with 40 school children and inspire them to create four mural arts for posterity. You are welcome to witness the historic process from the bridge.

The event is part of the Children’s Art Foundation’sArt and Literacy program, seeking to inspire school children age 6 to 12, to discover their innate talent and reach their full potential through Art. It seeks to provide a creative way to enhance the literacy of children. Their words and their imagination find life on paper, canvases and schools murals. The Foundation inspires our youth. It puts brushes and pencils, paper and paints into the hands of children, so their hopes and dreams can find voice.  It also takes art and artists some of Mexico’s very best to the schools and villages all around San Miguel so children can observe the creative process and bring it into their lives. And, it holds exhibits of the work of these children at the Bellas Artes, one of the most prominent art institutions in Mexico, for their work to be noticed at the most creative moment in their lives.  We hope you will enjoy the creative event and support the work of The Children’s Art Foundation.

Posting by supporters of Children’s Art Foundation: Larry and Don:  November 20th, 2014

Donald Smith and I live in Honolulu, and began visiting San Miguel about 16 months ago. In fact, when we get home, we are going to start the process of moving to San Miguel permanently.

SMA gets under one’s skin, doesn’t it?
Don retired from teaching and I retired from retail management. How did we get to the concert where we won the Toller Cranston painting?  Earlier this year, we made the
decision to make the majorityof any donations we did for children, and one of the first things that we saw was the benefit concert of Gil Gutierrez and Gabriel Hernandez for the Children’s Art Foundation.
Not only was it a wonderful show, but we won the painting!
Toller Cranston is an amazing person and artist. He has introduced us to many people here in SMA and we have appreciated his love of this beautiful city and his good work with the Children’s Art Foundation.
Sincerely,

Larry Kuhner

From the City

By Lic. Maria Jose Garrido E. – Director of Economic
Development, International Relations and Tourism
“From the first time I heard about the
Children’s Art Foundation I was charmed
with its wonderful work. Helping children of
San Miguel and giving them the opportunity
to expand their mind and imagination is an
increadible effort. I’m convinced that the
lecture and the art are some of the best ways to
do it.
On behalf of Mayor Mauricio Trejo Pureco I
wish to recognize Children’s Art Foundation
and Hannah Jarmain for their good work and
appreciate the opportunity to participate in
this great project .

Bellas Artes and Children’s Art Foundation

By Alberto Lenz – Director, Bellas Artes
Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez El Nigromante
INBA San Miguel de Allende
The Centro Cultural El Nigromante, of the
National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature,
joined efforts and resources with the
Children´s Art Foundation to give free art
workshops to children in low income
communities of San Miguel de Allende.
In so doing, we seek to convey message of art
to these deprived children who are full of it, in
areas of poverty in which the shortcomings of
all kinds are serious and obvious. But also, first
and foremost, we want to sow in them the
seeds of creativity, imagination and selfesteem,
so endowed with them, these children
are then engines of social change.
The compilation of drawings presented in this
book focuses on the theme of nature and the
city in the eyes of these children. It is
interesting to observe how, for the children
who live on the outskirts of the urban area,
nature is still a place of beauty and color, free
and happy encounter with birds, plants and
insects.
The city, almost always identified with the
emblematic building of the parish, is instead a
world somewhat cold and rigid, with empty
streets devoid of animals or people, only
houses and more houses. It is possible that
with these drawings and beautiful stories that
accompany them, these children instead give
us all a profound lesson.

About the work of the Foundation

” The Children’s Art Foundation has been helping the children of rural communities of San Miguel de Allende, for several years. Their work is most meaningful because it provides these children with the opportunity not only to explore their creativity, but also to partake in the journey of self- discovery. Once these children have been taught the tools necessary to connect with themselves, they can return to this throughout their lifetime as a haven and a tool for growth and development.”

Carmen Gutierrez, Artist Casa Diana, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

“The small book featuring the artistic expression by the children of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is perhaps the most public face of the amazing Children’s Art Foundation. The Foundation seeks to provide creative ways to enhance the literacy of children through art. Their words and imagination find life on both paper and canvas. The vision of the Foundation inspires our youth. It puts brushes and pencils, paper and paints into the hands of children so their hopes and dreams can find voice. It takes art and artists … some of Mexico’s very best … to the schools and villages all around San Miguel so the children can observe the creative process and bring it into their own lives. The Foundation exhibits the work of these students at the Bellas Artes, one of the most prominent art institutions in the region, so that attention will be paid at that most important moment when creativity first bloomed in the children’s lives. This book captures that wonderful moment for us all.”

Message From The Founder

Message from Hannah Jarmain, Founder- Children’s Art Foundation

Awards Night- Nov 10th 2012, Teatro Angela Peralta

You, the children of San Miguel, are very special. I don’t think there are any other children in the world who are as creative, inspiring and talented as the children of San Miguel.

When we issued the contest parameters to you all in May this year, we asked you to paint and tell your stories. Not only you painted over 600 masterpieces you have written 600 beautiful stories each that deserve a Nobel Prize for literature.

Your stories made me laugh and they also made me cry! Click here to read more »
